History and Mission Thank you for visiting the New Hampshire Citizens Alliance web site. Formerly the North Country Institute, New Hampshire Citizens Alliance (NHCA) was founded in 1978 in Haverhill, NH, by a group of citizens concerned about their schools, the fairness of their taxes and the quality of their local environment. Meeting in living rooms, the group discussed these problems and how they could work together with others to solve them. They wrote letters to town officials, organized events to demonstrate their concerns, and reached out to inform others about issues affecting all of their families. With each person that joined their efforts came new energy, new ideas and new problems to solve. Members of this new organization began to see a broader purpose for their group - to ensure a role for citizens in all important policy decisions. This effort has transformed into NHCA as you know it today. Based in Concord, with a regional office in Manchester, NHCA is the only organization in the state that consistently is a voice for NH residents on all policy issues. Our broad constituency helps to ensure that everyone, particularly those who do not have a voice in the policy debate, are heard. Today, NHCA's dynamic and creative board of directors and staff continue to make gains towards achieving our mission of social, economic and political justice for all. We work on issues of campaign finance reform, economic security, health care and an end to the war in Iraq. We encourage you to become a member if you are not one already; and if you are a member, please get involved! |
